Coolest Tangents Contest EVER!

Hi Everyone!

well, I have to say that I am getting pretty excited about my upcoming vacation… but don’t worry, I won’t forget about all of you when I am gone!  In fact, I want to spice things up a bit among you Originals before we start making the major changes to the website…  I am going to run a contest, here are some details:

In the effort to get more bloggers BEFORE opening the site up to the public, I am starting the New Blogger Contest!  The name of the game is simple, the person who recruits the most new bloggers wins!  All you have to do is direct people (friends, family, or whoever else you think would like to blog on Tangents) to this post.  All they have to do is post a comment requesting permission to blog and mention who they were recruited by… THAT’S IT!

You see, when they post the comment, they will have to input their email address which will make it very easy for me to set them up with an account.  However, in order for your blogger to count towards the total, he/she will need to post more than one blog post.  In other words, they have to be active (i.e. set up their blog, write a few posts, start to interact, etc.).

The winner of this contest will have their blog featured on the Tangents homepage for two-weeks once we officially launch AND will receive a $25 gift card to a restaurant in their area

The contest will last until March 8th

Good luck and have fun! 🙂

New Logo for Tangents! (Part 2)

Hey everyone –

I am back with the final batch of logos.  I took your suggestions and thought through some other ideas.  I made a good handful, deleted them, then started again, then deleted them, then went a whole different direction … and repeated the process.

I’m happy to say that I have the final, new Tangents logo!  It is simple, memorable, and relevant to what we do here (“tangents” coming out of the brain in every direction).  This logo also lends itself well to the direction I want to take the site…

SIDE NOTE:  I don’t think I have expressed this yet (or effectively expressed it through my posts) but I am VERY excited about the future of Tangents.  I am very confident that the site will eventually become a well known go-to site on the web, literally receiving tens of thousands of visitors a month!  I know the process is slow, but the fun part is you all will be able to say that you were there in the beginning… the ORIGINALS! 🙂

Okay, back to the original post topic:  below is the final logo, but I do have one more task for all of you…  you must select the color of the brain!  This accent color will then be incorporated into the new website design.

Please post a comment stating your color preference.  Simply put, the color with the most votes will win.  If there is a tie somehow, I will be the tie-break.  (Once the voting is done, I can begin preparing the new template.  I am off on vacation next week so I want to get as much done as I can 🙂 )

A Little Added Security

Hey guys-

I wanted to give you a quick update about what is going on behind the scenes at Tangents. The new path of Tangents is coming together quite nicely.  I took your suggestions into consideration and I am putting together a final logo.  I want to have the logo done before I move on to other visual aspects.

I mentioned this before, but as a reminder, one thing that will eventually happen is that Tangents will be available for the general public in the future. That being the case, I want to make sure we uphold the integrity of the site.

Introducing the Anti-Splog Plug-in!

Okay I know it isn’t THAT exciting for all of you… but what it will do is prevent bots/humans from creating blogs that are dedicated to Spam by providing us with multiple comfy layers of protection:

  1. Signup Prevention – these measures are mainly to stop bots. It includes limiting the number of sign-ups per IP address, changing the sign-up page location every 24hrs (great for deterring bots), and “human” tests like reCAPTCHA or other questions.
  2. The API – when signup is complete (email activated) and blog is first created, or when a new user publishes a new post it will send all kinds of blog and signup info to a security server where it will rate the blog based on our anti-splog logic (yes, that was kind of nerdy). The API will then return a splog Certainty number (0%-100%). If that number is greater than the sensitivity preference of 80% then the blog gets marked as spam… and happily deleted by ME! 🙂
  3. Moderation Queue: For existing blogs or blogs that get past other filters, the queue provides an ongoing way to monitor blogs and spam or flag them as valid (ignore) them more easily as they are updated with new posts. Also if a user tries to visit a blog that has been spammed, it will now show a user-friendly message and form to contact the admin (that’s me!) for review… and likely where I will nuke it upon seeing it is spam! Muahahahah (evil laugh)

For those of you who like complex process flows, I have included one below to show you our new state-of-the-art-anti-splog-super-awesome-technology… This process itself is enough to deter those pesky sploggers… I mean… just look at all those boxes and lines (click for larger image)!

New Logo for Tangents! (Part 1)

Okay, so I have been tinkering around in the effort to design a new logo for Tangents and I wanted to run a few ideas by you. Below I have 5 concepts that I have whipped up. Let me just preface them by saying the colors are by no means final… they are just colors I decided to go with at the time. Also, I may potentially have more concepts in the future…

That said, I would like your feedback on these. Which one(s) do you like? Do you have suggestions for colors? Do the colors look good? Have a totally different idea?

I can’t guarantee that I will implement all the suggestions, but I will definitely take what you all say into consideration. Oh, and after the logo is designed and the colors are chosen I will be moving onto the creation of the new website design (fun stuff!)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The Introduction of Justin

A first post is always difficult… but I probably have started this post over about seven times now and I still don’t know if it will even be good!  Nonetheless, I think I’ll forge ahead and pretend that the first few sentences aren’t akward for everyone involved.

The title of this post entails  “An Introduction” – and I think I’ll stick to the script.  My name is Justin, and I am the new owner of Tangents.org.  I have blogged in the past about a variety of topics (i.e. politics, religion, business, humor, etc.), so this seemed like a natural segway.  But you probably want to know something personal… okay well here goes…

First thing you should know about me is that I am a mind reader.  Don’t believe me?  … well, watch:

Right now you are thinking, “okay, so this guy owns Tangents now… what’s going to change?”

Pretty good right?  See I told you!  I know the last thing you probably want is some stranger comig in and messing up an already good thing.  Well the good news is that you won’t see any changes to Tangents in the upcoming days, perhaps even weeks – so no worries! 🙂

I do have some ideas I am tossing around, and I am working with the previous owner to sort out the best direction.  I also hope to rely on you, the loyalists of Tangets to help with some decisions regarding the site…. but more on that as it comes!  Until that time, just continue “posting-as-usual” and feel free to direct any questions my way.

I understand that it’s going to take some time for you all to “meet” me and to take me in (fingers crossed 🙂 !! )… but I think in time you will see that I am a pretty stand-up-guy.  I look forward to getting to know all of you by reading and commenting on your blogs!

Eeek. Another upgrade…

The backend has once again been upgraded…  It will look / function the same but be sure to email LISA with any bugs you find or other problems…  STAY OUT of the plugins.  🙂

Tangents Contest!

Ok guys.  I was looking through the stats today (not your wimpy stats, the huge stats program at the backend of this server) and comparing it to my Google Analytics data…  We can help ourselves greatly by adding a FEW MORE BLOGS and getting our daily posts total above 50.  Yes, FIFTY.

This would be of HUGE benefit to us all!  So, I have decided I will run a contest between now and June 1st to see who could get the MOST NEW BLOGGERS here by June 1.

Your family, your friends, random people on the net…  The winner will be the person who gets the most new bloggers on tangents — but these must be ACTIVE bloggers; who post at least 3 times per week.  So, to give time I will not pick the winner unti June 10th.  I will just end the contest on the first — then pick the winner.

THE PRIZE = 1 OF OUR FAMOUS “BASEMENT” ITEMS

Yes.  The winner will be able to pick (and keep) one item from our infamous “basement of stuff”.  Some of the items down there includes (all is new in box):

  • Video Camera w/ Green Screen & Effects Software
  • Remote Controlled Airplane
  • LCD Photo Watch
  • Shark DustVac
  • TV Poker Game
  • 2GB Ipod Nano w/ Video (knockoff)
  • Certificate for Endless Backrubs (for “taylhis” only!!)
  • Various Indoor Water Fountians
  • Digital Web Cam
  • DVD Player
  • Many Various Toys & Gifts

So, try your hardest.  Not only do you get a cool prize but you will get the reward of seeing you listed as the winner on Tangents.org and will benefit from the extra bloggers / posters.

HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO GET NEW BLOGGERS:

#1 – Send an eMail to Your Friends:
Hello,
I have recently been blogging in my spare time and it has been very fun.  Right now I am in a contest to see how many new people I can get to blog so I thought I would ask you to give it a try.  It is really easy and really fun.  It is a great way for us to keep each other updated on our daily lives.  Also, you can make a little money by adding Google AdWords if you want.  It is free to do and you can make a little money (LITTLE!).

To start your blog go to http://tangents.org/wp-signup.php and signup.  Be sure to enter your correct email address so you can complete your registration.  If you need any help setting up your blog just contact me and I will be glad to help you.  Once you get started it is very easy!!

Hope to see you on Tangents!  If you start blogging be sure to email me your blog address so I can add you to my favorite blogs and also send it to the site admin (so I can win the contest).

HOPE TO SEE YOU BLOGGING!

#2 – Post on Message Boards
Some message boards will allow you to setup a sig in your profile.  Change this signature to something like “Get a Free Blog at Tangents.Org and Make Money!”.  Notice that “Free Blog” is a link to http://tangents.org/wp-signup.php.

You can also do it through a normal post.  If you make a *REL* post (let’s not spam here) telling people how you like to blog now and concluding that they can blog with you by visiting http://tangents.org/wp-signup.php then that is good too!

#3 – Tell People at Work, Church (or Rehearsal!)
Tell the people at you work or wherever that they should checkout your blog and that they should start their own because it is fun and free.

BE CREATIVE.

I know everyone on this blog can get some new people.  It will benefit everyone by increasing the visibility of each blog; especially those already established.  Our Google rankings have been steadily increasing and if we get a few more active blogs going we will DRAMATICALLY increase traffic to all of our blogs.  Then we can all learn how to use affiliate programs to boost your profit far beyond the little AdWords money.

WHO WILL BE THE WINNER!!???…
